The 'A Cake for Every Day' project grew from a book I was given, titled "The Everyday Cake Book - a recipe for every day in the year" published in 1919. To modern eyes it is a very dry and uninspiring cookbook. It boasts no glossy pictures or frills, but it is an interesting historical document that speaks of changing tastes, domestic lives, cooking skills, and rationing.
In the past many women's lives were regimented by chores such as bake day and washday. Any expression of creativity and skill would have been channelled though sewing and baking. Making a child's birthday cake would have been a release from daily drudgery.
