Lent Shifts or confessions were presented at Shrovetide, when all meats and eggs, cooking fats and cheese were used up before the fasting and devotions of lent. It's also known as Mardi Gras - Fat Tuesday, the last day of feasting and carnival from Latin carnelevarium - the taking away of meat.
