Wednesday 11TH March

Lent a time for penitence and charity, has traditionally been a time to give alms or charitable doles to the poor. The church and landowners distributed cloths, food, fuel or money to the needy every year. Sometimes known as 'Penny Loaf day', small plain cakes and buns were a common form of doles. Today let us eat Plain Cake.
